UAAP grants deadline extension for Ateneo

In a statement released on Tuesday night, the UAAP granted an extension to Ateneo de Manila University with regards to its submission of its findings in light of the incident in Dipaculao, Aurora last month.

Statement reads as follows. 

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines has granted Ateneo de Manila University’s request to extend the deadline for the submission of its official findings on the June 8, 2026 incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, from July 15 to July 24, 2026.

All previously announced preventive measures remain in effect during the extension period, including the barring of the concerned members of the Ateneo coaching staff from all UAAP-related activities.

Ateneo requested the extension before the original deadline to complete its internal investigation and submit its report. The UAAP Board approved the request during its meeting.

Any determination of accountability will be based on the findings of the appropriate government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding body, and the UAAP, in accordance with the UAAP By-Laws and applicable rules and regulations.

PFA Open Senior Ranking Series resumes with third leg at Rizal Memorial

The Philippine Fencing Association’s senior ranking season returns to the strip this weekend as the third leg of the 2026 PFA Open Ranking Tournament takes place on July 4 and 5 at Rizal Memorial.
The two-day competition marks another important stop in the national ranking calendar, with fencers across foil, epee, and sabre expected to chase valuable points, podium finishes, and positioning in the race for year-end standings and national team consideration.

Second leg set the tone

The second leg last April 25 and 26, also held at Rizal Memorial, continued the Dr. Celso L. Dayrit Memorial Fencing Championships and drew around 250 competitors, underscoring the depth of the Open Division field. It followed a season opener that saw national team regulars, elite club fencers, and Modern Pentathlon standouts battle for early control across foil, epee, and sabre.

Nearly all of the early medalists returned for that April stop, while fencers fresh from UAAP, cadet and junior, and international campaigns added to the level of competition. That mix of proven names and rising challengers helped sharpen the ranking race heading into this weekend’s third leg.

Ranking points take center stage

Coming after the opening senior ranking leg at Amoranto Sports Complex in February and the second leg at Rizal Memorial in April, the third leg now gives competitors a timely opportunity to build on recent momentum, defend early gains, or make a decisive move up the leaderboard.

With the PFA calendar listing two more senior stops later in the year, including the fourth leg in September and the Philippine Open International in October, every direct elimination win this weekend could carry added weight in the broader ranking picture.

Storylines to watch

Among the key storylines will be how the early leaders respond under renewed pressure, particularly with the season now moving past its halfway point for the senior circuit. The third leg traditionally serves as a proving ground for contenders who have already built momentum, while also opening the door for emerging names from clubs and school-based programs to break through.

Members of the national Team, fresh from their exploits in the Senior Asian Fencing Championships in New Delhi, are set to participate. All but two from that pool are set to compete, including Penn State standout Sam Catantan, and Sean Lauron, who was a late scratch in New Delhi and was not able to participate.

Also set to join in are members of the Modern Pentathlon pool, led by Princess Honey Arbilon.

Third edition of Asia Pacific Padel Cup officially starts in Taguig

The Asia Pacific Padel Cup (APPC) 2026 officially opened today in Manila, marking the start of four days of competition featuring teams from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Denice Zamboanga Relinquishes ONE Atomweight MMA World Title, Welcomes Motherhood

Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga has relinquished the ONE Women's Atomweight MMA World Championship.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the first Filipina MMA World Champion announced her decision to vacate the throne after welcoming her first child with husband Fritz "Kid Tornado" Biagtan.

Out of respect for the division, she gave up the belt to allow contenders to pursue the title while she steps back to embrace motherhood.

“God has always had a beautiful plan for my life, and I trust His timing in everything. After much prayer and reflection, I have made the difficult decision to vacate my ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Championship,” Zamboanga wrote.

“This was not an easy choice, but I believe it is the right one for this season of my life and for the athletes in my division who continue to chase their dreams,” she added.

The 29-year-old Quezon City native has a 12-2 professional record, and is 7-2 in ONE Championship.

Zamboanga arrived at ONE in 2019 and quickly proved she belonged on the global stage. She rattled off three straight wins to open her promotional run, defeating Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan, Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi, and Watsapinya “Dream Girl” Kaewkhong.

The path forward then took a detour. Zamboanga suffered back-to-back defeats to South Korea's Ham Seo Hee at ONE: Empower in 2021 and ONE X in 2022, respectively. Refusing to let the setbacks define her, she rebuilt herself from the ground up, returning a sharper and more dangerous version of herself.

The bounce-back was immediate and convincing. Zamboanga strung together three consecutive victories over “MMA Sister” Lin Heqin, Julie Mezabarba, and Noelle “Lil' Monkey” Grandjean, earning her way back to the top of the atomweight division and into contention for gold.

With a long-awaited showdown against then-ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Champion and former teammate Stamp Fairtex derailed by the Thai’s knee injury, Zamboanga was given an opportunity to challenge for the ONE Interim Women’s Atomweight MMA World Title.

At ONE Fight Night 27 in January 2025, Zamboanga met Ukraine's Alyona Rassohyna with a lifelong dream within reach. She ultimately stopped Rassohyna in the second round via TKO, earning the interim belt and a US$50,000 performance bonus in the process.

The monumental victory etched her name permanently in the Philippine MMA history books, a triumph earned through years of delays and heartbreak.

Four months later, Zamboanga was elevated to undisputed ONE Women's Atomweight MMA World Champion when Stamp suffered a setback in her knee rehabilitation in May 2025 and relinquished the lineal belt.

Zamboanga was slated to make her first World Title defense against Japan's Ayaka “Zombie” Miura at ONE 173 last November at Ariake Arena in Tokyo. Medical concerns, which have since come to light as her pregnancy, forced her withdrawal.

The Filipina, however, made it clear she is not retiring. Zamboanga is turning her full attention to the most meaningful journey of her life, vowing to return when the time is right.

"While I am stepping away from the title, I am not stepping away from the sport I love. Fighting has shaped who I am, and the warrior in me will always remain,” Zamboanga said.

"Right now, my heart and focus are devoted to the greatest blessing God has entrusted to me. This season is teaching me that there are victories beyond championship belts, and I am embracing every moment of it with gratitude. This is not the end of my story. It’s simply a new chapter," she concluded.

Kacey dela Rosa to be honored at Collegiate Press Corps Awards

ATENEO de Manila University's Kacey dela Rosa will receive a special citation at the Collegiate Press Corps Awards Night presented by Strong Group Athletics after delivering historic performances for Gilas Pilipinas in both 5-on-5 and 3x3 basketball.

A two-time UAAP MVP, Dela Rosa has already established herself as one of the best athletes to come out of Katipunan in recent years, and her greatness will be hailed at the annual awards night to be held at Discovery Suites Manila.

After helping Ateneo secure a bronze-medal finish in UAAP Season 88 in her fourth year with the Blue Eagles, she turned her attention to the international stage, representing the Philippines and making her mark in both formats of the game.

Dela Rosa, who was also named to the Collegiate Women's Basketball Mythical Team, will be honored alongside the top performers in basketball, volleyball, and football from the UAAP and NCAA during the Awards Night, which is also supported by Converge FiberX, San Miguel Corporation, the Philippine Sports Commission, Go For Gold, D'Generals, and Buffalo Wings 'N Things.

Last December, Dela Rosa was among the anchors of the Gilas Pilipinas Women's team that reclaimed the gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, where she manned the center position in the absence of long-time Gilas stalwart Jack Animam.

She then followed it up with another gutsy performance at the 2027 FIBA Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France, where the Philippines notched its first win in an OQT against Colombia.

Dela Rosa was the team's leading scorer and rebounder in the tournament, averaging 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She also normed 2.2 blocks per contest.

But perhaps Dela Rosa's biggest impact came in 3x3, where she played a key role in leading the Philippines to its best-ever result in a FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup after winning silver with Gilas in early April.

In five games en route to the runner-up finish, Dela Rosa posted averages of 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

They then followed it up with an inspiring performance in the World Cup qualifiers in Singapore, where the Gilas women sealed their second appearance in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

Dela Rosa most recently saw action in the World Cup in Warsaw, Poland, where she and teammates Afril Bernardino, Camille Clarin, and Mikka Cacho scored a big win over Italy for the country's first-ever victory in the Women's FIBA 3x3 World Cup.

Philippines to host third edition of the Asia-Pacific Padel Cup

The Philippines in the APPC 2025

Continental padel action is set to come to the Philippines, with the third edition of The Asia-Pacific Padel Cup taking place on June 25-28 at Play Padel McKinley in Taguig.

Hosted by Padel Pilipinas, the recognized national sports association for padel in the country, the APPC will bring together ten teams from seven countries, as they compete both in Professional and Amateur levels.

Unlike conventional padel competitions, whether in the Asia-Pacific Padel Tour or elsewhere, the APPC runs on collective results from all three categories: male, female, and mixed. All matches will have corresponding points that will register in the overall team standings, turning each rally into something that matters beyond the ongoing scoreboard.

The Philippines is the defending champion of the competition, emerging as winners last year in Kuala Lumpur. To mount a successful title defense this year, Padel Pilipinas will need to fend off four teams in both Professional and Amateur levels:

In the case of Chinese-Taipei and Brunei, both countries are making their APPC debut, highlighting the continued rapid growth of padel across Asia. Meanwhile, both South Korea and Pakistan make their return trips to the competition after debuting last year.

Action will take place at the Taguig facility of Play Padel, which is the biggest padel facility in the country, located at Chateau Road corner Lombard Street in McKinley West. For those who are unable to watch in person, the matches will be streamed, with details to be confirmed on the APPC's official social media channels.

UAAP bars Ateneo coaches, sets July 15 deadline for Ateneo's investigation

The UAAP released this statement on Friday afternoon. 

The Board of Trustees of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines has approved the recommendation of the Board of Managing Directors to bar from the UAAP all the coaching staff of the Ateneo de Manila University who were present during the June 8 incident in Dipaculao, Aurora, pending the outcome of the investigations of the concerned government agencies, Ateneo’s independent fact-finding inquiry, and the League’s own investigation. As such, they are prohibited from participating in any UAAP-related activities, in any capacity, effective immediately and while these investigations are being conducted.

This preemptive measure, adopted even prior to the UAAP season, is intended to preserve the integrity of the ongoing inquiry and to ensure full transparency and due process as facts surrounding the incident are being carefully examined.

In addition, the UAAP has set July 15, 2026 as the deadline for the submission of the official findings of Ateneo de Manila University regarding the incident.

Amidst differing and clashing perceptions on this tragic incident, the UAAP, as a collegial body, is committed to adhere to its own governing rules and processes where the acts of a Member-University and personalities involved will be thoroughly evaluated by the other member schools before passing judgment. The UAAP reiterates that accountability shall be determined based on the results of a thorough and impartial investigation and its fidelity to its own rules and regulations. All those found responsible for any wrongdoing shall be held fully accountable under league regulations.

Above all, the UAAP extends its deepest sympathies to the bereaved parties and calls for justice, truth, and dignity for those who lost their lives in the incident. Their memories will be honored with the commitment to further protect our student-athletes so that such tragedy will never happen again.

But it was defense which did the trick, forcing San Beda to 20 turnovers and held high scoring Aldous Torculas to just five points on 2-for-7 shooting.

Coach Chito Victolero, however, still feels in disbelief how his side pulled off the victory after Mapua committed 20 turnovers and gave up 42 free throws to Arellano.

"I don't know how we got the win, but yun nga, a win is a win," said the comebacking mentor after the Cardinals squandered a 15-point lead, 85-70, but still held on to the triumph.

While championships are won on the court, legacy is built off of it – and the 2026 Collegiate Press Corps Awards (CPC) Night presented by Strong Group Athletics will be where Philippine collegiate sports' brightest stars cement theirs.

The awards night, which will put the finest student-athletes and personalities of UAAP Season 88 and NCAA Season 101 in the spotlight, will be held on June 29, 2026 at the Discovery Suites Manila in Ortigas, Pasig City.

The Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Year presented by Converge, which was voted and deliberated by the esteemed group of journalists from both national print and online media, will be among the highlights of the awards night.

Aside from this, the men’s and women’s basketball Mythical Five teams will also be revealed.

Presented by SGA anew, the men’s and women’s volleyball players from both the UAAP and the NCAA will likewise be feted in the season-ending event.

And for the second straight year, the Football Players of the Year for both UAAP and NCAA supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will be announced.

Of course, it will not only be the players who will be given their honors in the annual collegiate body ceremony supported by Go For Gold, D’Generals and Buffalos’ Wings ‘N Things.

The top UAAP and NCAA coaches of the year for basketball and volleyball brought by the San Miguel Corporation will be given well-deserved recognition as well for steering their respective teams to the top of the collegiate world.

The CPC will also hand a special citation to Ateneo de Manila University center Kacey dela Rosa for her impact not just for the Blue Eagles and the UAAP, but also for Gilas Pilipinas in international 5-on-5 and 3x3 basketball.

“Every year, new stars emerge and legends arrive to lord it over the famed collegiate courts and fields. And this year is no different with the CPC continuing its relentless drive to champion collegiate sports and recognize the student-athletes behind every championship and glory – once more and always,” said CPC president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star.

Italy leads six-team field as Pasig hosts VNL

A STACKED field of champions and medalists headlines the Philippine leg of the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) starting on Wednesday at Philsports Arena in Pasig.

World No. 1 and reigning VNL champion Italy banners the cast as the flagship annual international competition of volleyball’s world governing body FIVB returns to the country.

Japan, VNL silver medalist in 2024, enters the Philippine leg—presented by the Philippine Sports Commission—carrying momentum with a 4-0 win-loss record. Italy, three-time champion US and world No. 13 Czechia are at 3-1.

Starring skipper Mayu Ishikawa, Yoshino Sato and Yukiko Wada, Japan scored victories over France, Ukraine, Germany and Canada.

With Ekaterina Antropova, Merit Adigwe and Loveth Omoruyi leading the way, Italy zoomed past Bulgaria, Netherlands and Turkiye before Brazil ended their run.

No. 9 Serbia has managed one win in four matches, while 12th-ranked Dominican Republic is still seeking its first victory of the campaign.

World No. 7 USA battles the Dominican Republic in the 12 p.m. match on Wednesday, before Czechia and Italy  clash at 4 p.m. Japan and Serbia face off at 8 p.m.

Each team plays 12 matches in the group stage, with the top eight advancing to the finals in Macau.

The Philippine leg features Pool 5 in Week 2 of the competition. Other hosts of pool play of the prestigious event are Canada, Brazil, China, Türkiye, Thailand, Serbia, Hong Kong and Japan.

Asia has three representatives in the 18-nation field. World No. 6 China enters Week 2 with a 3-1 record, while No. 24 Thailand remains in search of its first victory after four matches.

2026 edition of Vermosa Green Run to help runners build earth-saving habits

That’s why the fifth edition of the Vermosa Green Run on June 28, 2026 is raising public awareness about ecosystem conservation, pushing for an active lifestyle and sports development, and supporting animal welfare, a fundamental pillar of sustainability.  

Lani Tan, General Manager of Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub and an athlete herself, says Green Run participants this year are made more mindful of the role they play in saving the planet. The Run wants to teach runners that being planet-friendly starts with simple habits that can easily be incorporated into training and race-day routines.

“Using reusable hydration bottles or collapsible cups, properly segregating waste, picking up litter along the route or whenever possible, and using designated disposal areas are simple habits that can easily be incorporated into training and race-day routines,” she said.

At the Run, Green Runners are encouraged to donate used plastic bottles in exchange for race perks including a Php 100 registration fee discount. The bottles will be recycled to create eco bricks that will become construction materials for future projects of Ayala Land.

This year's race singlets, finisher shirts, and dog bandanas are made from recycled PET bottles to show that discarded plastics can be transformed into high-quality products that support active lifestyles.

“Wearing planet-friendly gear on race day is a shared badge of honor that shows we are actively investing in the preservation of the environment that sustains our active lifestyles,” Tan said.

For her, the true success of the Green Run will be measured by the good habits that participants adopt long after the event ends.

“As we celebrate our fifth year, we hope to inspire a permanent shift toward mindful consumption and conscious living. Crossing the finish line should be the start of a lifelong habit of waste reduction, active recycling, and respecting outdoor spaces. We want our runners to carry this sustainable mindset back to their respective neighborhoods, workplaces, and every future race track they conquer,” Tan said.

Green Run 2026 will be held in the lush and sprawling Vermosa Estates in Imus, Cavite, with 3K, 5K, 10K, 21K race categories and a 1K Dog Run attracting runners of different fitness levels and running purpose. 

More than a race, the event serves as a reminder that building a healthier planet does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with choosing to go greener, one small step at a time, Tan added.

Korea claims AVC Women’s Cup crown

Korea capped its dominant campaign in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Volleyball Cup with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 victory over Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match on Sunday before a roaring full house crowd at Candon City Arena.

Sohwi Kang came up with 14 points, while Hyunsoo Na scored 12 and Yunju Jeong added 11 as world No. 31 Korea completed a morale-boosting run after some heartbreaking results in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL).

It was a much different match from their energy-sapping five-set showdown in pool play earlier in the week, as Korea came out firing on all cylinders to the delight of the packed 8,000-seat Candon Arena.

“I’m really happy we were able to have this very meaningful and valuable result today,” Kang said, noting that team confidence was low during a trying period recently in the FIVB’s top annual competition VNL.

“We were losing many games in the VNL. We felt the value of the victories in the AVC every time we won,” she added.

Kang, who averaged 14 points per match, was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and the City of Candon headed by Mayor Eric D. Singson.

Three-time champion Vietnam salvaged the bronze medal, getting back at Kazakhstan, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19.

Thi Thanh Thuy Tran had 16 points, Thi Bich Thuy Tran scored 15 and Thi Nuh Quynh Vi delivered 13 points as Vietnam exacted revenge on Kazakhstan, which won their pool play showdown in five sets and ended their run of 23 straight victories in the meet.

Kristina Belova had 10 points, while Zhanna Syroyeshkina and Tatyana Yatskiv had eight points each for Kazakhstan, which placed fourth for the second straight time.

Indonesia defeated Australia in the battle for fifth place, 25-13, 25-19, 26-24.

Iran denied host Philippines a solid finish, scoring a 25-21, 25-12, 25-21 victory in the battle for seventh.

Latest statement from the UAAP re: Aurora incident

The UAAP released this statement on Sunday as developments continue to arise involving what transpired in Aurora earlier this week.

As the UAAP continues to mourn the untimely passing of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili on June 8, 2026, in Dipaculao, Aurora, the League again extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, loved ones, teammates, coaches, and the entire Ateneo community.

We stand in solidarity with all those grieving this profound loss and join them in honoring the memory of two young lives taken too soon.

As previously stated, the UAAP will fully take into account the findings of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the concerned member school, as only limited details have been officially confirmed.

We urge all concerned agencies to conduct a speedy and thorough investigation in order to put all speculations to rest.

The UAAP is closely following all developments surrounding this tragic incident and carefully reviewing the findings of the ongoing investigations as they come.When completed, all relevant information will be referred to the seven other member schools for a full and fair review.

LA Salle survived Mo Konateh's monster game while San Beda and Jose Rizal University continued to pace the NCAA Group in the Independence Day staging of the 19th Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup presented by ABC Tile Adhesive on Friday.

Jacob Cortez and rookie Jason Cibull connived in guiding the Green Archers to back-to-back wins as they held off Far Eastern University, 82-77 at Playtime Filoil Centre in San Juan.

Cortez led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Cibull added 14 markers to move up to 2-1.

"My teammates gave me a lot of trust and I have a lot of trust in myself. Those shots I took earlier, I worked a lot on those. Today it wasn’t just following but my teammates are getting the rebound, they’re doing the hustle. Whatever I don’t do they’re there to do it and we have a lot of trust to each other," said Cortez.

Konateh shouldered the load for the Tamaraws with 29 points and 12 rebounds, but that can't halt their freefall to their third straight defeat to sink to 1-3 in this tilt which has Hanes, Buffalo's Wings N Things, Wallem, BDO, Akari, Smart, Molten, Reyes Barbecue, Nature's Spring, Tela.com Athletics, Brothers Burger, and Don Benito's as sponsors.

Aldous Torculas erupted for 28 points and six rebounds, including two clutch triples that gave the Red Lions a 93-87 breathing room in the final minute.

Zedjay Etulle also collected 14 points, while RC Calimag delivered down the stretch and finished with 12 points, two rebounds, and three assists.

Jhomel Ancheta stepped up for the 2-2 Blazers with 17 points, as Zenric Jarque and Matthew Jucom contributed 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Heavy Bombers also stayed spotless in four games after pulling off a 73-67 comeback win over Arellano.

Trailing by three entering the final canto, the Heavy Bombers leaned on their defense to shut down the Chiefs, holding them to just 10 points in the payoff period to complete the turnaround.

Jalen Garcia led JRU with 21 points, six rebounds, and one assist, while Allan Laurenaria stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Winless Arellano, meanwhile, absorbed its fifth straight defeat despite keeping things close for most of the game. Aaron Manansala and Troy Valencia paced the Chiefs with 11 points apiece.

Letran also extended its winning streak to six after edging Lyceum of the Philippines University, 86-83, in a down-to-the-wire finish.

Jimboy Estrada delivered the biggest shot of the night with a crucial triple before Aaron Buensalida knocked down two charities in the clutch to seal the win.
