The University of the Philippines stood out as the frontrunner in the 86th season of the UAAP, and Malick Diouf is leading the way for the Fighting Maroons.
Malick served as the rock for last season's finalists in their opening week, as the incumbent Most Valuable Player averaged 17 points, 15.33 rebounds, 1.33 assists, and 2.67 blocks, securing a double-double in all three games.
The big man from Senegal was the unquestioned choice to be the first UAAP men's Player of the Week, covering games played between September 30 to October 8. He bested other nominees Kevin Quiambao of La Salle, Precious Momowei of the University of the East, Kean Baclaan of National University, and Ced Manzano of Adamson.
Diouf, playing in his final year of eligibility, downplayed his individual feats and is focused on helping UP reclaim championship glory.
He says, "I’m not here for individual awards. I just wanna play. I’m just here to play and help my team. Everybody (in the league) wants to improve so (the MVP award) is a bonus."
The Player of the Week is selected by members of the Collegiate Press Corps comprised of scribes manning the collegiate beat. It is presented by the San Miguel Corporation and also backed by minor sponsors Discovery Suites and Jockey.
The University of the Philippines seeks to extend their winning streak on October 11 against FEU at the Mall of Asia Arena.
