The Philippines dropped its opening assignment to Vietnam in the AVC Cup for Women on Sunday night at the PhilSports Arena, 19-25 17-25 29-31.
The first two sets saw the hosts go on a strong start, with their counterparts eventually catching up, and then overtaking them to go ahead 2-0.
In the final set, Vietnam managed to go ahead and even reach matchpoint at 24-23, but Jeanatte Panaga's kill tied things up and forced the extension.
From there, both sides went toe-to-toe, with the Philippines even managing to be at the cusp of clinching the set. Unfortunately, a Tots Carlos net violation gave the win to Vietnam.
Kyla Atienza starred for the country in a losing effort, keeping rallies alive with her digs and receptions to give her squad a chance for potential scoring opportunities. She shared to the media afterwards, "I'm very proud, especially when I do see those fans who cheer for us. I'm very happy right now." The FEU alumna adds about their opponents, "They are very good. For me, it's a good experience and the exposure to play against other countries."
Tran Tri Tranh Thuy led the way for Vietnam with twenty points, as she and the rest of the team will look to make it back-to-back wins, with China up next at 1pm Monday.
China also happens to be the team the Philippines will face next, which will take place on Tuesday night.
