UST upends Ateneo in UAAP men's finals rematch

The University of Santo Tomas kept their record undefeated in the UAAP Season 86 Men's Tennis Tournament on Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, dispatching Ateneo de Manila in their tie, 4-1.

Eric Jay Tangub secured the first win in the tie for the Male Tennisters, defeating JD Velez, 6-4 6-1 in the second singles pairing.

Last season's Rookie-MVP Nilo Ledama doubled the lead, outlasting  Noy Seno in the first singles matchup, 6-1 1-6 6-2.

The tie was clinched for UST in the first doubles, due to JJ Llavore and Stef Gurria forced to retire against Steven Sonsona and Symon Jaculan in the second set, with the latter pair winning the first set, 6-2.

Ateneo did manage to avert a sweep with Nio Tria and Axl Gonzaga taking the second doubles match over Richard Bautista and Geo Serino, 3-6 7-6 (4), 6-2.

UST did managed to close things out with Sebastian Santos defeating Austin delos Santos in the third singles match, 6-3 6-1, moving them atop the standings with four straight victories.

The defeat dropped Ateneo 3-1, alongside the University of the East and National University.

The Red Warriors claimed a 5-0 sweep against winless Adamson, while the Bulldogs took care of business against La Salle, 4-1.

Securing the wins for UE are Romeo Largo (6-0 6-4 over Miecoz Candelesa), Marc Nicole Suson (7-6(1) 6-2 over Ramon Bentillo, Dawson Ormoc and Prince Bo Lastimosa (6-0 4-6 6-1 over Lawrence Sombreo and Tristan Correo), Rastley John Baje and Kent Morales (7-5 6-4 over Jerald Delos Santos and Nikko Lumahan), and Jarrell Edangga (6-1 6-2 over Herald Aton).

NU got its result from triumphs by AJ Alejandre and Gab Bandoquillo (6-2 7-6(5) over Leyton Portin and Enzo Enriquez), and Benedict Santiago (6-3 6-2 over Ohye Tortal). Ibarra Ortega locked in the tie with a 6-4 5-7 6-4 victory over EJ Geluz.

The Green Tennisters managed to secure their lone win in the second doubles, as Brysl Libao and RJ Virrey topped Angil Balaoing and Vaughn Codilla, 6-2 6-2.

The defeat drops DLSU to 1-4 in the season so far.

On the women's side, National University remained undefeated, defeating Ateneo in their tie, 3-2.

Elsie Abarquez kicked things off with a 6-1 6-0 win over Althea Ong in the first singles pairing. It was then followed up with a 6-0 6-0 thrashing by Angela Cabaral and Rovie Baluete against Tricia Howard and Nina Sandejas in the first doubles.

Securing the tie for the defending champions was Adeline Abadia, who nipped Chelsea Roque, 6-3 6-2.

The Blue Eagles ended their first round campaign without a victory.

In the other women's matchup, the University of Santo Tomas swept the University of the Philippines, 5-0, to draw themselves level with them at 2-1.

Patricia Lim kickstarted things for the Female Tennisters with a 6-4 6-3 win over Renee Esteban, followed by Debbie Gom-os and Miles Vitaliano against Joshea Malazarte and Jesha Cervantes, 6-3 6-2 in the first doubles.

Clinching the tie for UST is Alex Santos, with the senior outlasting Jufe Cocoy, 6-2 2-6 6-2.
