UST reclaims Women's Tennis title

c/o UAAP Media Team

The UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas reclaimed the UAAP Women’s Tennis crown, halting National University’s bid for a 'four-peat' with a commanding 3-0 victory in Game 3 of the Season 87 Finals, Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

Last season, the Female Tennisters drew first blood in the Finals but ultimately fell short in the decisive Game 3. This time, they made sure history would not repeat itself—clinching Game 2 with a 3-1 decision before sealing the championship in the winner-take-all third tie, capturing their first title since Season 80.

The victory marked UST’s eighth overall women’s tennis crown, the most in UAAP history.

So proud, so happy for the team,” said UST head coach Dennis Sta. Cruz. “‘Yun naman ang game plan namin is to get at least two singles for this last game. Luckily, we got three. ‘Di lang dalawa ‘yung binigay namin so we managed to finish the series in three singles na hindi na umabot ng doubles.

(“So proud, so happy for the team. That was really our game plan—to get at least two singles matches in this final game. Luckily, we got three. We didn’t just give two, so we managed to finish the series with three singles wins without having to go into the doubles.”)

Sana [itong championship ay] maging start ng run, humaba ‘yung run since most of my players are still young, first year and second year,” he added.

(“I hope this championship marks the start of a long run, especially since most of my players are still young—first-years and second-years.")

Finals MVP Mica Emana showed incredible poise and resilience in the second singles match. After splitting the first two sets, Emana dug deep to outlast Danna Abad, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, clinching the championship and ending a seven-season title drought for the EspaƱa-based squad.

Tinibayan ko lang at tinapangan ko po, kagaya ng pagtitiwala sakin ng coaches ko and team ko so nagtiwala rin ako sa sarili ko para makuha ko itong award,” said Emana, who also followed in the footsteps of her sister Kaye by earning the Rookie of the Year award.

(“I just stayed strong and toughened up, just like how my coaches and my team trusted me—so I also believed in myself to be able to earn this award.")

Kita ko naman ‘yung progress ng Rookie of the Year natin si Mica Emana, nag-deliver talaga siya noong last two games ng finals. So medyo nag-mature. Malaking binago niya from the first round. Nag-mature nang todo ‘yung player,” added Sta. Cruz, commending Mica's growth throughout the season.

(“I really saw the progress of our Rookie of the Year, Mica Emana. She really delivered in the last two games of the finals. She’s matured a lot. She made major improvements since the first round. She truly grew as a player.")

UST drew first blood in Game 3 behind the composed play of Patricia Lim in the third singles match. Lim overcame a tight first set against Julia Carvajal before taking control in the second to win, 6-4, 6-1.

It feels good knowing that we’ve earned this win. I’ve been here since Season 85. We first won bronze and then silver in 86, and now gold. It was a long journey and I knew that we could make it. It was a team effort. Everyone did their part and I’m very glad of the result,” said Lim.

(“It feels good knowing that we’ve earned this win. I’ve been here since Season 85. We first won bronze, then silver in Season 86, and now gold. It’s been a long journey, and I always believed we could make it. It was a team effort—everyone did their part, and I’m very happy with the result.")

Our mindset was, since this is our last [year] especially for me and Debbie [Gom-os], we’re graduating students, ibuhos na ang lahat. We should fight and do our best.

(“Our mindset was, since this is our last year—especially for me and Debbie [Gom-os] as graduating students—we had to give it our all. We needed to fight and do our best. No fear, no regrets. Leave everything on the court. Just keep fighting until the very end because this is really our last shot.”)

Co-MVP Kaye Emana followed up with a gritty performance in the first singles match, defeating NU's JM Carcueva in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, to give UST an early 2-0 lead.

Bumalik kami sa dati naming match-up knowing na kulang sila dahil sa injury ni Jasmine [Jaran] kaya bumalik kami sa dating strategy namin and nag-work naman po. Nagsakto ‘yung gusto namin,” said Emana, who shared MVP honors this season with Fighting Maroon Jufe Cocoy in this tournament supported by Wilson Philippines.

(“We went back to our previous match-up strategy, knowing they were undermanned because of Jasmine [Jaran]’s injury, so we returned to our old game plan—and it worked. Things went exactly the way we wanted.)

Super happy na this batch and ‘yung mga graduates namin nakapag-champion sila bago makapagtapos."

(“I’m super happy that this batch, especially our graduating players, were able to win a championship before they graduate.”)

NU reclaims men's tennis title

Tie on Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center

7 a.m.  – UST vs. NU (Women’s Finals Game 3)

National University returned to the summit of UAAP Men’s Tennis, ending a six-season title drought with a dominant 3-0 win over defending champion University of Santo Tomas in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 87 Finals, late Saturday evening at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

After a hard-fought 3-2 win in Game 1, the Bulldogs only needed two wins to clinch their sixth overall UAAP men’s tennis title—spoiling UST’s bid for a three-peat in the process.

This marks NU’s fourth championship this season, adding to their collection alongside Men’s Badminton, Women’s Taekwondo, and Women’s Beach Volleyball.

Facing a 1–5 deficit in the opening set, Aljon Talatayod delivered a gritty performance to come from behind and stun UST’s Sebastian Santos, 7(7)–6(3), 6–2, sealing the title for the Bulldogs in this tournament backed by Wilson Philippines.

Iniba din nila, though ‘yung isang player na nawala for about I think two years siyang nawala,” said NU head coach Bobby Esquivel, referring to Talatayod.  “Nakiusap samin na kunin namin siya and even this year, nung first semester, nag-struggle siya sa pag-aral niya and even in the team hindi siya nakiki-practice… then after that he proved his worth naman. I did not expect na siya pa ‘yung mismong magsasara doon. So alam mo ‘yung kaparaanan ng Panginoon, hindi mo masabi.

(“It was tough. I’m really happy because we didn’t expect that would be their lineup. They made some changes, and one of their players had actually been gone for about two years. He personally asked us to take him in, and even this year, during the first semester, he struggled with his academics and even with the team—he wasn’t joining practices… but after that, he proved his worth. I didn’t expect that he would be the one to finish it for us. You really can’t predict the ways of the Lord.”)

We’re so happy. We’re so blessed kasi from the Final Four, tapos natalo kami in the first game, then the next game, how are we going to recover? Parang ang hirap, and then sabi ko nga sa kanila kanina na ‘Imagine-in mo, naisip niyo ba na nandito tayo ngayon? We won the first match last Wednesday, and then today, what do you think?

(“We’re so happy. We’re so blessed because coming from the Final Four, we lost the first game, and then the next game, the question was: how are we going to recover? It felt so difficult, and earlier I told them, ‘Just imagine—did you ever think we’d be here right now? We won the first match last Wednesday, and now today, what do you think?’”)

I want them to believe in themselves. ‘Yun ‘yung pinaka-key namin and then of course ‘yung lagi naming sinasabi sa kanila na ‘pag tingin niyo na ginagawa niyo na ang lahat, nahihirapan kayo, that’s the time na dapat na mas mag-step up kayo, that’s the time na mas maging positive kayo and that’s the time na kailangan mas mag-pray kayo,” Esquivel added.

(“I just want them to believe in themselves. That’s our biggest key. And of course, what we always tell them is: when you feel like you’ve already given everything and things are still hard, that’s the time you have to step up even more, that’s the time you need to stay positive, and that’s the time you need to pray even harder.)

Season 87 Rookie of the Year and co-MVP Andrei Padao gave NU an early advantage, remaining undefeated in singles play after dispatching UST’s Christopher Sonsona, 6-3, 6-0, in the second singles match.

Tapos ito lang ‘yung chance na bubuhos talaga ako,” said Padao, who was also named co-Finals MVP.

("I'm so happy because, of course, we prepared for this for a whole year… we went through intense training and even joined preseason tournaments, so we’re really overjoyed that all our hard work paid off—and we were also able to return the effort our coaches gave us. I’m extremely happy because this is only my first year, and considering the course I’m taking, Accountancy, which is really tough… this was my biggest opportunity to truly excel. And this was the one chance where I gave it everything I had.”)

("Of course, my goal was to be Rookie of the Year, but I didn’t expect to be named MVP as well. I really didn’t expect that I’d go undefeated this season.”)

Team captain EJ Tugade, who also took home co-Finals MVP honors, delivered the first major blow to UST with a 6-4, 6-4 upset over co-MVP Nilo Ledama in the first singles match—handing Ledama his first loss of the season.

First of all, napakasarap talaga sa feeling manalo nitong season na ‘to kasi matagal-tagal na naming inaasam-asam ‘to since Season 85. Akala namin, next day pa. But nagapang naman kanina at nakuha din namin ‘yung bawat panalo kanina and nagpapasalamat talaga kami sa nangyari ngayon,” said Tugade.

(“First of all, it feels incredibly good to win this season because we’ve been longing for this since Season 85. Now that we’ve finally achieved it, the feeling is just amazing. I didn’t expect that we would get it today—we actually thought it would take another day. But we really fought for it earlier, and we managed to secure every win, so we’re truly grateful for everything that happened today.”)

The Bulldogs now aim to complete a golden double as their women’s team battles UST in the deciding Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Finals tomorrow, Sunday, at 7 a.m.

UST forces decider in Women's Tennis

Tie on Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center:

7 a.m. - UST vs. NU (Women’s Finals Game 3)

WITH their backs against the wall, the University of Santo Tomas bounced back in a big way, defeating defending champion National University, 3-1, to stay alive in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Tennis Finals, Saturday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

The win forces a winner-takes-all Game 3, scheduled for Sunday at 7 a.m., in the same venue.

Following their 1-3 defeat in Game 1 last Wednesday, UST head coach Dennis Sta. Cruz encouraged his team to use that loss as motivation to extend the series and keep their title hopes alive in the tournament backed by Wilson Philippines.

Game 2, we’re down 0-1. Wala nang bukas so they have to play all out. [but] eventually Mica Emana, the Rookie of the Year, delivered the very crucial match. Kalaban niya si Elsie Abarquez noong Game 1. Ang layo ng score… buti today, nagdeliver talaga ‘yung bata,” said Sta. Cruz.

Ni-remind ko lang din sa kanila ‘yung goal nila from the start is to win the championship. Sinabihan ko sila na we’re one step closer or nandyan na sa finals, wag sayangin ‘yung pinaghirapan from the start. Buti na lang nanalo, na-extend ‘yung series,” he added.

Stepping up under pressure, Minette Bentillo and Justine Maneja delivered the clincher for UST in the second doubles match, overcoming JM Carcueva and Kolin Cornell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to seal the win and send the series to a decisive third game.

Laging may kinabukasan. Walang tomorrow kaya pinilit naming manalo ngayon. Para sa kinabukasan ‘yun. The way na para [makuha] natin ‘yung kinabukasan na ‘yun is to fight. Fight ‘til the end. No matter what happens, win or lose fight. Fight with pride and heart,” said Maneja.

NU had struck first blood in the tie, with Danna Abad pulling away late in both sets to dispatch Debbie Gom-os in the opening singles match. Abad took the last two games to close the first set, 6-4, before finishing strong with three consecutive games in the second, 6-3.

But UST’s Rookie of the Year Mica Emana answered back in the second singles match. After a gritty 7-5 win in the opening set against NU’s Elsie Abarquez, Emana raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set before Abarquez was forced to retire due to cramps, leveling the tie at 1-all.

The Female Tennisters regained control in the third singles match, where Season co-MVP Kaye Emana scored a 6-4, 6-5(ret.) win after NU’s Jasmine Jaran was forced to retire with an ankle sprain, putting UST back on top, 2-1.

Medyo napanghinaan ako ng loob pero noong nanalo ‘yung kapatid ko sabi ko may chance po talaga,” said MVP Emana, who shared the top individual honor along with University of the Philippines' Jufe Cocoy.

NU on verge of reclaiming Men's Tennis crown

c/o UAAP Media Team

Ties on Saturday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center

7 a.m. - UST vs. NU (Women’s Finals Game 2)
2 p.m. - UST vs. NU (Men’s Finals Game 2)

NATIONAL University moved within striking distance of reclaiming the UAAP Men’s Tennis title after grinding out a thrilling 3-2 victory over defending champion University of Santo Tomas in Game 1 of the Finals, Wednesday evening at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

Now just one win away from their first championship since Season 81—and sixth overall—the Bulldogs aim to finish the job in Game 2, which is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday at the same venue.

Kaya lagi naming guidance 'yung 'We can do all things through Christ who strengthens me' at lagi naming inaalay sa Kanya ang lahat ng pagpupuri't pasasasalamat,” said NU head coach Bobby Esquivel.

(“We always remind the kids that this isn’t about the abilities of us coaches or the players, but it’s really with the help of the Lord. That’s why our guiding verse is always ‘We can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,’ and we always offer all the praise and gratitude to Him.")

At the start of the game pa lang, sinabi namin sa kanila na paniwalaan niyo 'yung sarili niyo. At dapat 'yung mindset natin is positive attitude lagi na kahit anong mangyari—especially 'yung down na down na kami—kailangan doon kami mas lalong mag-step up, mas maging positive.”

(“Even at the start of the game, we told them to believe in themselves. And our mindset should always be to have a positive attitude no matter what happens—especially when we’re really down—that’s when we need to step up even more and be even more positive.”)

Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla delivered the clincher for NU, dominating Steven Sonsona and Symon Jaculan, 6-1, 6-1, in the second doubles match.

Their win sealed the Game 1 triumph and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Finals of the tournament backed by Wilson Philippines.

Like ‘yung will to win namin, ‘yun ang nagpa-overcome ng takot or ng kalaban namin kanina.

(“We really needed to strive to get Game 1 so that we’d have the momentum heading into Game 2 and won’t feel as pressured in the next match. There was pressure, but we really just pushed through. It was our will to win that helped us overcome our fears and our opponents earlier.”)

(“We’ll tighten things up even more in the next game—like in our training—and during the match itself, we’ll definitely aim to perform even better.”)

Nilo Ledama earlier gave the Male Tennisters the early edge by outlasting Aljon Talatayod. After taking the opening set, Ledama held his nerve in a tense tiebreaker to secure a 6-2, 7(8)-6(6) win.

Rookie standout Andrei Padao remained undefeated in singles play, dispatching UST’s Sebastian Santos, 6-3, 6-2, to level the tie for NU.

UST struck back behind the duo of Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines, who took the first doubles match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Gab Bandoquillo and Jules Lazaro to momentarily reclaim the advantage, 2-1.

But the Bulldogs quickly leveled the tie once more as EJ Tugade dominated Ericjay Tangub in the third singles match, 6-3, 6-2, to make it 2-all and set the stage for Balaoing and Padilla's decisive performance.

The awarding ceremony for the individual honors and third-place teams will be held after Game 2 of the women’s finals, which starts earlier at 7 a.m.

2 p.m. - UST vs. NU (Men’s Finals Game 2)

NATIONAL University is on the verge of claiming the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Tennis championship after securing a 3-1 victory over University of Santo Tomas in Game 1 of the Finals, Wednesday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

The Lady Bulldogs are now just one win away from clinching their fourth consecutive title and eighth overall in this tournament also supported by Wilson Philippines.

They have the opportunity to seal the title in Game 2, set for 7 a.m. on Saturday at the same venue.

‘Yung game plan talaga namin, ‘yung bawat player sinasabihan namin na kailangan laruin na nila ‘yung laro nila at saka mostly makadalawa kami sa singles… so sabi namin na huwag lang i-pressure ‘yung sarili. Total, sanay naman sila na nakarating sila finals. Kumbaga sa experience, medyo lamang kayo sabi ko, [so] laruin niyo lang ‘yung laro niyo,” said NU coach Ronard Joven.

(“Our game plan was for each player to just play their game. We also emphasized winning at least two singles matches. We told them not to put too much pressure on themselves. They’re used to being in the finals, so with their experience, they have the upper hand. I told them to just play their game.”)

Iba kasi talaga ‘pag nakuha mo ‘yung Game 1 kasi nangyari na samin last year noong Game 1 natalo kami so iba ‘yung pressure na nabibigay ‘pag natalo ka ng Game 1. Ito ngayon kasi nanalo sila ng Game 1 so medyo mas mataas ‘yung confidence nila ngayon sa laro,” he added.

(“It’s different when you win Game 1, because last year we lost it, and the pressure really builds after that. But now, winning Game 1 gives them higher confidence going into Game 2.")

Rovie Baulete and Adi Abadia delivered the pivotal win in the series opener, defeating Judy Padilla and Debbie Gom-os 6-2, 6-2 in the first doubles match, giving the defending champions a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three final.

Winning Game 1 is very important for our team, as it eases the pressure for the next game,” Baulete said. “It’s also crucial that we remain united and trust each other. The key is to stay focused on the game and trust that we can handle every match we face.”

In a composed second singles outing, Jasmine Jaran outmaneuvered Patricia Lim 6-3, 6-4, claiming the opening point for the Lady Bulldogs.

In a spirited comeback, Kaye Emana bounced back after losing the first set, defeating Danna Abad 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first singles match, putting UST back in the race.

However, Elsie Abarquez seized control of the third singles match, dismissing Mica Emana 6-3, 6-1 in straight sets, and giving NU a 2-1 lead in the tie.

Sampaloc Skirmish set to commence for Tennis

c/o UAAP Media Team

Ties on Wednesday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center inside Rizal Memorial Sports Complex:

7 a.m. - UST vs. NU (Women’s Finals Game 1)
2 p.m. - UST vs. NU (Men’s Finals Game 1)

A decade after their last championship clash, University of Santo Tomas and National University are set to rekindle their rivalry in the UAAP Season 87 Men's Tennis Finals.

Tie 1 of the men's tournament, supported by Wilson Philippines, kicks off at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

Meanwhile, the women’s division will also witness a finals rematch between the Lady Bulldogs and the Female Tennisters, marking their second straight title duel.

Tie 1 begins earlier at 7:00 a.m. at the same venue.

The Male Tennisters, reigning champions from Seasons 85 and 86, are aiming for their 17th UAAP men’s tennis title. They enter the finals with strong momentum, having swept the second round of eliminations and securing a convincing 4-1 victory over the UE Red Warriors in the Final Four.

Leading the way for UST is Season 86 MVP and team captain Nilo Ledama, who remains undefeated this season.

Despite the high stakes, UST head coach Alexander Diego expressed confidence in his veteran-laden squad, which includes Steven Sonsona, Symon Jaculan, Ericjay Tangub, and Sebastian Santos—all of whom are competing in their third straight finals appearance.

Sanay na kami sa pressure. Every time we compete in the UAAP, from the start, there’s always pressure. Also the players, I think they know how to handle kasi ‘yung experience nila for the last two seasons, sila pa rin ‘yung players na maglalaro so I think we have the advantage of that kasi they know already how to handle the pressure,” said Diego.

(“We’re already used to the pressure. Every time we compete in the UAAP, there’s always pressure from the very beginning. Also, the players—I think they know how to handle it because they’ve had the experience from the last two seasons, and they’re still the same players competing now. So I think we have the advantage there, because they already know how to deal with the pressure.")

On the other side, National University, seeking its sixth men’s title, clinched second place in the elimination round with a 10-2 record. The Bulldogs punched their ticket to the finals with a gritty 3-1 win over the UP Fighting Maroons in a do-or-die Final Four match.

NU will rely heavily on rookie sensation Andrei Padao, their top singles player, who has also maintained a spotless record this season.

Despite facing a formidable opponent in the back-to-back champions, NU head coach Ronard Joven is optimistic about his squad’s chances.

Sa amin, hindi namin masabi ‘yung laro kasi for sure, back-to-back champion ‘yung UST. Kami, kumbaga, nothing to lose kami diyan pero lalaban kami,” said Joven. “Kailangan talaga focus then preparation up to Wednesday para sa finals.”

(“For us, we can’t really predict the match because UST is a back-to-back champion for sure. For us, it’s like we have nothing to lose, but we will definitely fight. We really need to stay focused and prepare all the way until Wednesday for the finals.”)

The men’s teams split their elimination round matchups, with NU handing UST its only loss in a 3-2 first-round win. UST answered back with a dominant 4-1 victory in the second round.

In the women’s division, NU is aiming for a fourth straight championship and eighth overall. The Lady Bulldogs completed the elimination round with a 7-1 record and will count on the veteran trio of Danna Abad, JM Carcueva, and Elsie Abarquez—each making their third consecutive finals appearance.

Back to training na naman po to prepare for the finals at saka with teamwork po talaga,” said co-captain Carcueva. “Mas dodoble kami ng kayod sa training at saka magfo-focus kami doon sa mga kulang namin na skills.”

(“We’re back to training again to prepare for the finals, and we’re really focusing on teamwork. We’ll double our effort in training and focus on the skills we still need to improve.”)

UST, which also finished with a 7-1 record, is determined to reclaim a title they last won in Season 80 and match NU’s eight overall championships. The Female Tennisters will be led by last season’s Rookie of the Year Kaye Emana, who went undefeated in eliminations, as well as veterans Debbie Gom-os, Minette Bentillo, and Justine Maneja.

For the second time, NU pa rin [ang kalaban]. Parang ang nangyayari is hindi dapat i-underestimate ang defending champions, so parang feeling namin it all boils down to kung sino ang gustong manalo,” said UST head coach Dennis Sta. Cruz.

("For the second time, it's still NU [as our opponent]. It seems like the situation is that you shouldn't underestimate the defending champions, so we feel like it all boils down to who wants to win more.")

Just like in the men’s division, the women’s teams handed each other their only losses in the elimination round. NU edged UST 3-2 in the first round, but the Female Tennisters returned the favor with a 3-2 win in the second.

NU formalizes Sampaloc Skirmish finals matchup in tennis

c/o UAAP Media Team

Ties on Wednesday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center:

7 a.m. - NU vs. UST (Women’s Finals Game 1)
2 p.m. - UST vs. NU (Men’s Finals Game 1)

FOR the first time since Season 81, National University is heading to the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Tennis Finals after defeating No. 3 seed University of the Philippines, 3-1, in a do-or-die Final Four match, Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Manila.

Holding a twice-to-beat advantage, the Bulldogs bounced back from a narrow 2-3 loss on Saturday. They needed both ties to finally eliminate the Fighting Maroons and secure a spot in the championship round, where they will compete for their sixth overall men’s title in this tournament supported by Wilson Philippines.

("We're really happy that we made it to the finals. In the Final Four, we had the twice-to-beat advantage, but we lost yesterday. So we told the players, 'Just play your game,' because there's no more tomorrow, it's do-or-die, we really had to push through.")

NU will face No. 1 seed and three-peat seeking University of Santo Tomas in the best-of-three championship series, which begins at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the same venue. The women’s final will feature the same matchup, with NU and UST vying for the title earlier in the day at 7 a.m.

Tie 1 will also break the tie between the Bulldogs and the Male Tennisters this season as the eliminations ended with a split. NU won the first round to deal UST its first loss, 3-2, but the defending champions bagged the second-round meeting, 4-1.

Team captain EJ Tugade delivered when it mattered most, securing a nail-biting 7(11)-6(9), 4-6, 6-3 win over Miguel Iglupas in the third singles match to send the Bulldogs to the championship.

Andrei Padao led NU’s charge in the first singles match, dominating Aslan Carbonilla 6-0, 6-0 in a statement performance.

Loucas Fernandez breezed past Lazaro, dropping just three games on his way to a 6-3, 6-0 victory in the third singles match, giving the Fighting Maroons their only point.

In a hard-fought 6(5)-7(7), 6-4, 10-5 victory, Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla battled through a grueling three-set match against Raymund Goco and Lance Fernandez, giving the Bulldogs a crucial 2-1 lead.

The second doubles match between NU’s Aljon Talatayod and Gab Bandoquillo, and UP’s Andrei Jarata and Karl Miguel, was later abandoned at 6-1, 5-5, with UP leading.

("So I told them, just play their game, and thankfully they believed in themselves and their abilities because UP is no joke; they're also complete. So right now, we just got lucky in this match that we won. This game really meant a lot to us.")

UST earns men's tennis final spot

Tie Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center

7 a.m. - NU vs. UP (Men's Final Four)

REIGNING titlist University of Santo Tomas secured its third consecutive finals berth, while University of the Philippines kept its championship hopes alive by forcing a deciding match in their semifinal series against National University in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Tennis Final Four, Saturday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Manila.

With the twice-to-beat advantage, the Male Tennisters needed just one win to eliminate the University of the East Red Warriors, claiming a 4–1 victory and staying on course for a third straight men’s title in this tournament, which is also supported by Wilson Philippines.

We’re happy kasi bumalik ulit kami sa finals. ‘Yung kay Nilo [Ledama] [umabot ng] third set so at least nakuha namin. And then ‘yung first doubles, we’re happy kasi nakuha rin namin,” said UST head coach Alexander Diego.

(“We’re happy because we’re back in the finals again. Nilo [Ledama] went to the third set, so at least we got that. And then in the first doubles, we’re happy because we won that as well.")

Kilala rin naman namin ‘yung players nila [UP and NU], so titingnan namin kung sino ‘yung makakalaban namin diyan and then… we will check the lineup. And then usually ‘yung sa conditioning nila so ime-maintain pa rin namin,” he added, with UST’s opponent in the title match still to be determined.

(“We also know their players [UP and NU], so we’ll see who we’ll be facing there and then… we will check the lineup. And then usually, we focus on their conditioning, so we’ll maintain ours as well.")

Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines led the Male Tennisters to the championship round, dominating Red Warriors Mark Dave Palanas and RJ Baje in the first doubles match, 6-0, 6-2.

Ericjay Tangub set the tone early, dispatching UE’s Gerald Gemida in the third singles match, 6-1, 6-4, to give UST its first point.

Meanwhile, UP extended its semifinal series against the twice-to-beat NU to a decider after a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Very happy, overwhelmed if I may say. We fought to live another day. ‘Yun masasabi ko sa laro ngayon. We were, I think, down after losing first singles. We were down 1-2 and then down both sets sa dalawang doubles, and we still found a way to win, so I’m very happy with that performance,” said UP coach Jacob Lagman.

("Very happy, overwhelmed if I may say. We fought to live another day. That’s what I can say about today’s game. I think we were down after losing the first singles match. We were down 1-2 and then behind in both sets of the two doubles matches, and we still found a way to win, so I’m very happy with that performance.")

In a crucial second doubles match, Andrei Jarata and Karl Miguel stepped up for the Fighting Maroons, pulling off a 6(3)-7(7), 6-1, 10-4 victory over Aljon Talatayod and Gab Bandoquillo.

UST, NU seek to formalize finals berths in men's tennis

c/o UAAP Media Team

Ties Saturday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center inside Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

7 a.m. - UST vs UE (Men's Final Four)
7 a.m. - NU vs UP (Men's Final Four)

The race to the UAAP Season 87 Men's Tennis Finals heads to its last stretch today (Saturday) at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila, as top-ranked University of Santo Tomas and second-seeded National University seek to capitalize on their twice-to-beat advantages against University of the East and University of the Philippines, respectively.

Defending champion UST, led by Season 86 MVP Nilo Ledama, is determined to extend its reign and secure a Finals berth for the third consecutive year.

The Male Tennisters, who claimed back-to-back championships in Seasons 85 and 86, hold a record 16 men’s tennis titles—the most in UAAP history—and are now aiming for their 17th.

[Having] the experience for the past two years, medyo alam na namin i-handle ‘yung pressure, kung paano i-handle ‘yung lineups, ‘yung changes. So every time if there is crucial [situation] na we have to change lineups, mas confident na or mas sanay na kami [sa] anong gagawin,” said UST head coach Alexander Diego.

("With the experience we've had over the past two years, we’ve somewhat learned how to handle the pressure, how to manage the lineups and the changes. So every time there's a crucial situation where we need to adjust the lineup, we're more confident and more familiar with what we need to do.")

Standing in their way is a determined UE squad led by JB Aguilar and Marc Suson, making its fourth straight Final Four appearance and looking to reclaim the championship for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in Seasons 79 and 80.

On the other side, NU will lean on top singles contenders EJ Tugade and rookie Andrei Padao as they aim to return to the Finals and reclaim the championship they last won in Season 81.

Kailangan po namin i-support ‘yung bawat isa… lalo na sa [tuwing] maka-points po kami,” said Bulldogs team captain Tugade on the team’s focus heading into the Final Four.

("I think it’s really about coordination with each other, especially in our doubles. We need to communicate, boost our partner because doubles isn’t an easy game… the pair really needs to coordinate and push each other. We need to support one another, especially whenever we score points.")

Meanwhile, UP will look to Loucas Fernandez and rookie Miguel Iglupas to challenge NU’s twice-to-beat advantage and end their 24-year title drought, with their last championship dating back to Season 62.

The top-seeded Male Tennisters hold a strong position to defend their crown, having swept the Red Warriors in the eliminations with a commanding 4-1 victory before surviving a tight 3-2 duel.

Meanwhile, NU and UP are set for a high-stakes tiebreaker of their own, with the Fighting Maroons narrowly winning their first-round encounter, 3-2, before the Bulldogs responded with a dominant 4-1 victory in the second round.

UNIVERSITY of the Philippines secured a decisive 4-1 victory over the University of the East, avenging their first-round loss and solidifying their third seed position in the UAAP Season 87 Men's Tennis Tournament, Sunday at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center in Malate, Manila.

Andrei Jarata and Karl Miguel clinched the overall win in an intense second doubles match, overcoming Kent Morales and RJ Baje with scores of 7-5, 6-4.

What the team showed today was the adjustments we wanted to make, and it was so successful today. That’s why as a team captain, I’m so happy with how they performed; so I guess maintain that energy, that will to win, and I think we’ll be fine,” said UP team captain Loucas Fernandez.

Coming into the Final Four, we’re already behind; so, I think the mindset is just to win the first [tie]. If we think na we have two [ties] to win pa, mentally it’s gonna seem like a big mountain to climb so honestly, just win the first [tie] and then don’t think about the twice-to-beat advantage. Just win the first [tie] and after that anything can happen na.”

The Red Warriors initially took the lead when JB Aguilar defeated Aslan Carbonilla with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the third singles match. However, the Fighting Maroons quickly retaliated as Miguel Iglupas dispatched Gerald Gemida with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in the first singles.

Loucas Fernandez then shifted the momentum in UP's favor, dominating Romeo Largo with a swift win of 6-2, 6-1, which pushed them into the lead, setting up the clincher from Jarata and Miguel.

In a tense three-set battle, Lance Fernandez and Raymund Goco secured the Fighting Maroons’ fourth match victory, defeating Marc Suson and Kiz Bryan Cinco with scores of 6-3, 3-6, and 5-1 (ret.) in the first doubles match, effectively ending the tie.

The Diliman-based squad concluded the elimination round with an 8-4 record, securing third place and a Final Four matchup in this tournament also supported by Wilson Philippines against the second-seeded and twice-to-beat National University Bulldogs.

Conversely, the Red Warriors (7-5) secured the fourth seed and will face the top-ranked University of Santo Tomas Male Tennisters in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, riding a wave of momentum into the Final Four, NU secured its second consecutive victory by decisively routing Adamson University, 4-1.

Andrei Padao's strong performance, winning 6-3, 6-2 against Miecoz Candelasa in the first singles match, set the tone for the Bulldogs’ overall triumph.

Jules Lazaro opened the match with a convincing victory, winning 6-2, 6-1 against Adamson's Lander Butcon in the third singles match. Maintaining the pressure, Tugade succeeded in the second singles, defeating Lander Butcon with a score of 6-2, 6-0.

The Soaring Falcons managed to secure a point through Nikko Lumahang and Angelo Rosales, who won the first doubles match 6-4, 6-2 against Aljon Talatayod and Gab Bandoquillo.

The tie concluded with NU pair Angil Balaoing and Christian Padilla winning 7-5, 7(7)-6(4) over Herald Aton and Emmanuel Pedrosa in the second doubles match.

The Bulldogs finished the elimination round with a 10-2 record, securing second place, while the Soaring Falcons ended their season in sixth place with a 2-10 record.

On the other hand, defending champion University of Santo Tomas replicated their dominance over Season 86 finals opponent Ateneo de Manila University, securing a 4-1 victory.

Ericjay Tangub’s 6-1, 6-0 victory over JB Cuarto in the second singles provided the seamless finish, earning the Male Tennisters the overall victory.

UST quickly established its authority, with Season 86 MVP Nilo Ledama delivering a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gab Quintana in third singles. The Male Tennisters continued their strong start as Christopher Sonsona followed with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win against Rafa Mendoza in first singles, putting UST up 2-0.

Despite UST's early dominance, Ateneo's JD Velez and Stef Gurria fought back, displaying remarkable resilience to win first doubles 6-3, 6-1 against Steven Sonsona and Brent Cortes.

The tension mounted in second doubles, where Male Tennisters Richard Bautista and Geo Serino finally closed out the tie with a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 12-10 victory over JJ Llavore and Gian Camingue.

The win propelled UST to an 11-1 record, maintaining its first-place standing, while Ateneo ended its season in fifth place with a 3-9 card.

In the lone women’s tie of the day, De La Salle University concluded its season on a positive note, earning a 4-1 victory over Ateneo for their second win.

The overall win was finalized by Amor Idjao and Precious Miranda's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Adriana Cabahug and Audrey Ruiz in the first doubles match.

(“In the Final Four, I think UP and UE will face each other tomorrow. Whoever wins will be our opponent, so we are prepared.")
