Filipinas set for February camp

c/o Philippine Football Federation

The Philippine Football Federation is to hold a training camp for the Senior Women's National Football Team next month, kicking off its busy year ahead.

Serving as the culmination for the camp is an intrasquad exhibition on February 25 at the Mall of Asia Football Field, which is already nearing completion. The event is slated to start at 6pm.

Head Coach Mark Torcaso says about the upcoming camp, "I’m really looking forward to having the Filipinas back in action at home, where the supporters in Manila can get a chance to experience the team up close, in one of the city’s new and exciting football venues. With the ASEAN Women’s Championship and the Asian Cup Qualifiers taking place midyear, and the SEA Games being held in December, there’s a lot to play for in 2025. This camp gives us a great opportunity to continue building the foundation for the way we want to play. We cannot wait to be back home to showcase our Filipinas."

PFF Senior Director for National Teams Freddy Gonzalez adds, "The Filipinas haven't spent much time at home since their historic World Cup run, so it's a really good opportunity for all the fans to connect with the team, and for our players to savor the experience of playing in front of their supporters. I can't think of a better way to introduce the new Mall of Asia Football Field to the Philippine public. Nine days of solid work at home, familiarizing with one another and with Coach Mark's game model will be a great way to start a big 2025 for the Filipinas."

The Filipinas aim to successfully defend their title in the ASEAN Women's Championship, while also secure a medal at the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand. They are also set to start their quest to return to the AFC Asian Cup finals after their success in the previous edition allowed them to make their FIFA Women's World Cup debut.

adidas reveals Predator 25 targeting the Modern Goalscorer

c/o adidas

adidas has revealed its latest version of their iconic Predator line of football shoes, one that you can already avail at your favorite place to purchase kicks.

Called the Predator 25, it blends archival color nods and design features with the latest technology tailored towards the new generation of footballers.

What immediately stands out is its vibrant red colorway, which is often associated with its classic tongue decorating the entire upper portion of the boot, highlighting its iconic DNA.

The wavy black lines weaving through its three stripes on the medial and lateral sides of the boot is a true homage to one of its predecessors, the Predator Accelerator from 1998. Adding to the aesthetic is the "Predator" branding that is displayed on the side of the heel and on the tongue.

On the technological aspect, adidas tweaked the upper construction for the Predator 25, integrating an upgraded STRIKESKIN that has been re-engineered in order to enhance the grip between the boot and the ball through higher and longer quantities of rubber elements on the strike zone of the boot, as well as HYBRIDTOUCH 2.0 applied across the upper of the boot with less layers to reduce break-in time and provide a more moulded fit. At the same time, this feature would provide additional cushioning in key areas for comfort and a soft touch on the ball.

CONTROLFLAME 2.0, which is a lightweight soleplate that supports traction, acceleration, and rapid rotational movement of players through full-length tooling and external heel counter, returns after being initially introduced a year ago.

Also being included is the fold over tongue, which has been refreshed to enhance striking made possible through new rubber elements enabling improvements in touch and feel, and protection through an additional layer of foam.

In unveiling the Predator 25, adidas GM for Football Sam Handy says, "The Predator franchise has always been based on pushing the boundaries of boot design – starting with a product that fundamentally altered the landscape of the game. Last year we revisited the archive to reconnect the tongue with a new generation of player. For Predator 25 we focus on adding more character via an adapted visual story that hints at - and reskins - beloved aspects of earlier icons. Under the hood, we have tweaked and upgraded the existing performance technologies, to create something really special for 2025."

One of adidas' many ambassadors has been tapped to spread the gospel of the latest Predator.

Arsenal and England sensation Alessia Russo shares her thoughts about the boot: "For me, the Predator boot is about being bold and making a statement on the pitch – from how it supports your goals to how iconic its design is. The tongue, which is hands down my favourite thing about it, is even better on this one, and the colourway is something else – I’m buzzing to play in it this year and see what I can do in front of goal."

Expect the big names of the sport to be toting these kicks, from the likes of Jude Bellingham and Pedri, to the best female footballer in the world, Aitana Bonmati.

The Predator 25 comes with laced and laceless versions, as well as a classic laced with a fold over tongue.

At prices starting at PhP 13,000, football enthusiasts will be able to purchase these kicks starting January 16 at adidas outlets and selected retailers, or one can purchase them directly at adidas.com.ph.

Hong Kong, Macau keep postseason hopes flickering

c/o EASL

The newcomer teams secured key wins on Wednesday night to bolster their cases to make the EASL Final Four.

Earlier in the evening, Macau capped off its prelims with an 89-78 triumph over Busan KCC Egis, finishing their Group B campaign at 3-3.

The Black Bears were leading 68-66 with six minutes left, before ending the game on a 21-12 run thanks to the efforts of Adonis Thomas and Jenning Leung, as well as from Damian Chong Qui and Samuel Deguara.

Chong Qui would finish with 23 points and eleven assists, while Deguara was a rebound short of a 20/20 performance with 24 points and nineteen boards.

Cady Lalanne impressed in his EASL debut for Busan, matching himself against the Maltese-Italian giant with 27 points and thirteen boards, as well as four assists. Heo Ung added twenty markers in the defeat, which was their fourth in five and effectively eliminated them from postseason contention.

Macau's hopes now rest on the aspirations of the New Taipei Kings and the Meralco Bolts, who will face off on February 12, but before that, those two teams will have separate opposition next week, with NTK facing Busan on the 21st, and the Bolts hosting Ryukyu Golden Kings on the 22nd.

In the other matchup, fellow newcomer Hong Kong Eastern dismantled San Miguel Beermen, 84-74 at the PhilSports Arena, earning a third win over their opposition in the last month.

Chris McLaughlin led the way with fifteen points and seventeen rebounds, extending his double-double streak to five matches.

The visitors took advantage of a strong start, erecting an 11-1 lead and never really looked back, except for a stretch in the fourth period that that managed to reduce the deficit to just seven points at 75-68 with under 3.5 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the Beermen, they were unable to cut the deficit further, as they remain winless in five outings so far continentally.

Their inability to kick things off well in their matches have been a noticeable trend in their last few matches. San Miguel trailed 22-12 in their previous meeting with Eastern, whilst their matchup last week against Hiroshima saw them trail 30-18 at the end of the first period.

With their third straight victory in Group A, Hong Kong moves to 3-2, with a huge matchup against Taoyuan Pauian Pilots looming on February 5. A win would secure them a spot in the EASL Final Four on their inaugural campaign.

HK Eastern seeks to complete San Miguel sweep

c/o EASL

San Miguel and Hong Kong Eastern face off in one of two scheduled East Asia Super League matches on Wednesday.

Set to tip off at 810pm, the Beermen are hoping third time's the charm against their opposition, having fallen short in both meetings so far, as HK Eastern is a guest team in the ongoing PBA Commissioner's Cup.

Their first meeting took place in Hong Kong last December 18, with the hosts fending off San Miguel's late comeback attempt to end up 71-62 winners.

Four days later, they met again, with Eastern securing a 99-91 overtime triumph, with Glen Yang scoring 26 points. The game served as the debut for Jabari Narcis, who contributed 28 points and ten rebounds. Narcis is expected to make his EASL debut after sitting out last week's matchup against the Dragonflies in Hiroshima, providing much needed help for Torren Jones and JuneMar Fajardo.

Already eliminated from postseason contention having lost all four games so far, San Miguel is seeking to secure a strong finish in continental play, hoping that this would lead into some positive momentum domestically.

The Leo Austria-coached side are currently eighth place toting a 4-4 record, good enough to be in the final postseason spot for this conference.

In addition, they could also serve as spoilers to both HK Eastern and Suwon KT Sonicboom, whom they finish Group Stage action with this coming February 12.

After losing their first two continental matches, HK Eastern have won two straight games, following up their win over the Beermen with a 69-61 victory over Suwon last January 7. Both of these matches taking place at their home digs at Southorn Stadium.

Thanks to Hayden Blankley's thirteen points and five rebounds, they are now currently in third place in Group A at 2-2. With Hiroshima having locked up the one spot in the group, it will be a battle with Suwon and current second placers Taoyuan, whom HK Eastern will visit next month, for the other semifinal berth up for grabs.

Chris McLaughlin and Cameron Clark have been vital in setting things up for Hong Kong, with Blankley, Yang, and Kobey Lam serving as an effective supporting cast.

They are also looking to have this current stretch to translate in their stint in the PBA, where they are currently 6-3 and a game behind Northport atop the standings.

In the other scheduled continental matchup, Busan KCC Egis and the Macau Black Bears face off in Korea.

With both teams toting three losses, the loser of this matchup is pretty much eliminated from postseason contention.

Macau made history on their previous encounter, as Damian Chong Qui produced the league's first triple-double last November, but the Black Bears are coming off a blowout defeat to New Taipei last month.

Busan recently rejiggered their lineup, sending Deonte Burton to former EASL participants Anyang JKJ in exchange for Cady Lalanne, hoping his presence will improve their play.

Both EASL games are set to be broadcast domestically through either One Sports, One Sports+, or Pilipinas Live.

Dr. Obet Vital, Casiey Dongallo, three others join UP

c/o OASD

The shoe has officially been dropped, as the University of the Philippines through its Office for Athletics and Sports Development, announced that Dr. Obet Vital and Casiey Dongallo have committed to the program.

Vital served as an assistant to Jerry Yee in the University of the East, eventually taking on interim head coaching duties when Yee was suspended by the league last season.

He also served as the mentor of California Academy For Lilminius, where he coached Dongallo at the high school level before they moved up in the collegiate ranks with the Lady Warriors.

Now with the Fighting Maroons, Vital will serve as an assistant to newly-installed head coach Benson Bocboc, while also overseeing the grassroots program and the university's training pool.

The Cebuano native set a record for points scored in a single season for what turned out to be her lone season at UE with 291 points, and she will play an integral role for the Lady Maroons when she becomes eligible next season.

Also joining Dongallo in serving residency this coming season are her former teammates at CAL who committed to UE: Kizzie Madriaga, Jelai Gajero and Jenalyn Umayam. Madriaga served as the team captain, whilst Gajero missed out on last season due to injury and was set to play a key role for the Lady Warriors this season.

These moves are aimed to bolster a program that won just one game last season, and has hopes of making the postseason for the first time since 2017 when the team still had Tots Carlos and Isa Molde. Backed by Frank Lao and his Strong Group Athletics program, they have already made some inroads for the upcoming season, securing commitments from incoming freshmen Kianne Olango, Yesha Noceja, and Bienne Bansil, snapping up Kassy Doering, who impressed fans as a soon-to-be one-and-done standout during the preseason, and tapping Alohi Robins-Hardy as an assistant whilst she waits for her eventual PVL debut.

From the incumbents, Nina Ytang is coming off a campaign where she became the second-best middle blocker, while Nica Celis and Irah Jaboneta provide veteran leadership for a young side.

Last season's head coach and now the university's program director for volleyball Oliver Almadro says about these recent events, "Their arrival is a sign that Mr. Frank Lao, SGA, and OASD are really sincere in developing the UP volleyball program. Their addition to our roster, together with our recruits this year, will definitely make our team a contender in the following years."

OASD Director Bo Perasol adds, "It's about time na palakasin din natin ang volleyball teams natin because they have great potential to be another source for unity ng UP community. We welcome the entry of Doc Obet and his players 'di lang para palakasin ang WVT, but to also show that we're turning serious about competing in volleyball."

Joson ready to claim the moment at Manila Hustle

c/o FIBA

Same objective, different circumstances.

Jhazmin Joson seeks to secure a championship at the upcoming third edition of the Manila Hustle 3x3 tournament.

Having reached the championship game last year with Titans, the Ateneo alumna has been tapped to be a key figure for Gilas Women in this competition, which will take place on February 8-9 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

The national team lost all three of its matches in last year's edition to finish in 13th place, using the competition as a starting point that saw them participate in the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series this past season.

Armed with that experience, the Gilas Women quartet looks ready to make improvements in the upcoming invitational, which is co-presented by Uratex, Smart, and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. Aside from Jhazmin, they also tapped Hazelle Yam from Discovery Perlas to join forces with holdovers Camille Clarin and Mikka Cacho.

Jozon shares, "I’m very motivated. I feel like being on a different team will give me so much fire because I’ve been playing with these girls for a while now."

She adds about their overseas work, "Experiencing that level of competition for sure will definitely help us out."

The Los Angeles native also notes, "Everyone came from a different background in college, but since we’ve known and played together for a year, we have a feel of how the system is. We are more familiar with our roles and how we can make each other better and how to play together."

In sharing what stands out for this Gilas Women quartet, Jozon says, "What makes us different is our grit, that we go beyond our reach because we have what it takes. We definitely go beyond what is asked."

And with regards to what the opposition will be seeing from this unit, she highlights, "So expect us to fight every second of the game and expect us that it won’t be easy to go against us."

Gilas Women will be one of seven local teams seeking to dethrone defending champions ZOOS in this tournament, hich has Titan as official partner, together with Wilson, Seiko, B’lue, Secret Fresh, BDO, Jollibee, TRYP by Wyndham, Jisulife, Rexona, and Laurin.

It’s bigger in participation of countries and tourist arrivals and we’re pleased to partner with government in this effort.” Pangilinan said.

Bachmann expressed confidence in the hosting and vowed government support to help make the Philippine edition as the best ever in FIVB history.

It’s the same people involved in the FIBA World Cup hosting, from the private sector to the government, legislators and NSAs [national sports association], so we’re confident that this hosting will also be a great success,” Bachmann said.

Tolentino also pledged the POC’s full backing of the FIVB MWCH.

Just like the FIBA World Cup, the POC is in full support for this hosting,” Tolentino said. “Just like basketball, now it’s volleyball.”

Hiroshima earn EASL postseason berth

c/o EASL

Half of the EASL Final Four field has been confirmed, as the Hiroshima Dragonflies blew out the San Miguel Beermen, 94-63, on Wednesday night at the Hiroshima Sun Plaza.

Nick Mayo and Keijiro Mitani each scored eighteen points to lead to the B.LEAGUE champions to their fourth win in five games in Group A. Kerry Blackshear Jr added a near triple-double with twelve points, fifteen rebounds, and nine assists, while also nabbing three steals.

Combined with the 69-61 victory of Hong Kong Eastern against Suwon KT Sonicboom, the results guaranteed a top-two finish for Hiroshima, which is good enough to secure entry into the postseason scheduled to take place in March.

They join fellow B.LEAGUE side Ryukyu Golden Kings, who locked in their berth last Christmas. The two best teams of the Japanese top flight will have the chance to keep the EASL title still in their nation's hands, following the achievement of the Chiba Jets last year.

Hiroshima caps off their pool play action hosting the Taoyuan Pilots on January 22.

As for the Beermen, the defeat keeps them winless in continental play this season, and with their fourth straight loss, effectively eliminates them from making the semifinals. Reinforcement Torren Jones led all scorers with 24 points and thirteen rebounds, while JuneMar Fajardo was the only other player in double figures with twelve and nine rebounds.

San Miguel will attempt to secure a win on January 15 when it hosts Hong Kong Eastern, and then complete their continental participation by traveling to Korea on February 12 to face Suwon.

Philippines reveals squad for AFC Women's Futsal Asian Cup qualifying

c/o Philippine Football Federation

Amidst the backdrop of recent developments involving the women's futsal team, the Philippine Football Federation has called up fourteen players for the upcoming AFC Women's Futsal Asian Cup 2025 Qualifiers.

Set to take place from January 11-19 at the Yunusobod Sports Complex in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the Philippines will tangle with Kuwait, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Australia in Group C of the tournament. Finishing in the top two of the group secures a spot in the finals proper, which is to take place this May in China.

Three spots to the inaugural edition of the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup are at stake, with the Philippines already earmarked a spot as the host of the competition set to be held in November.

To assemble the team, the PFF held a camp last December 26-30 in Manila, supplemented by training earlier this week.

Leading the way are a few holdovers from the team that participated in the ASEAN Women's Futsal Championship late last year: Shai del Campo, Cathrine Graversen, Samantha Hughes, Vrendelle Nuera, and Kayla Santiago.

This is supplemented by recent Filipinas call-ups Shelah Cadag, Sara Castaneda, Bella Flanigan, Katrina Guillou, and Dionesa Tolentin.

Completing the team are Judy Connolly, Rocelle MendaƱo, Nicole Ramores, and Regine Rebosura.

Acting as the head coach is Rafa Merino Rodriguez. The Barcelona-born coach holds a UEFA Pro License (Level 3) and an FA Level 1 in Football (England). He also possesses expertise in sports coaching, earned at Florida Universitaria in Valencia, Spain. Merino has managed several first-division futsal clubs, including Pescados RubĆ©n Burela FS and Barcelona's Esportiu RubĆ FS.

In being named as the gaffer, the Spaniard shares, "I am honored to be appointed as the new head coach of the Philippine Women’s National Futsal Team. I look forward to working with these players to build a competitive, unified squad ready to excel in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. We are focused on achieving success in the upcoming tournament."

With a spot already assured in the FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup, the federation has been doing its part to reflect readiness in the competition. The participation of the team formerly known as the Pinay 5 in Asian Cup qualifying is a key step to gauge their play after their ASEAN campaign.

PFF President John Gutierrez says, "The Asian Cup Qualifiers will be a pivotal moment for our women’s futsal national team, as their performance here will set the tone for our campaign in the FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup."

He adds, "In terms of our preparation, I couldn’t be happier with this team we built, headed by our new head coach, Rafa Merino. I think we’ve assembled the best players we can, dedicated players to play for the country and nothing else. As far as preparation goes, I am very optimistic."

Gutierrez concludes, "More than just the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, we would also like to make our mark in the entire Asian Region. That is why we are treating this AFC Women’s Futsal qualifier very seriously by fielding the strongest team possible."

The federation is dedicated to ensuring the successful participation of its Women’s National Futsal Team at the inaugural event, an important milestone that will elevate Philippine futsal on the global stage and inspire thousands of aspiring futsal players in the country.

In addition, they also shared that FIFA has accepted PhilSports Arena and the Victorias City Coliseum in Negros Occidental as venues for the Futsal World Cup.

The Philippines will face Kuwait in their opening match on January 11, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. (PHT), with the remaining matches as follows.

• January 13, 2025 – Philippines vs. Uzbekistan | Monday, 6:00 PM

• January 15, 2025 – Philippines vs. Turkmenistan | Wednesday, 6:00 PM

• January 19, 2025 – Philippines vs. Australia | Sunday, 6:00 PM

Jesus Navas bids goodbye to football

Sevilla held a special ceremony to allow their fans to give a proper send-off to Jesus Navas. LALIGA shared an English translation of the speech he prepared for that ceremony at the RamĆ³n SĆ”nchez-PizjuĆ”n.

Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for joining me and for sharing all this time together. Today we close a life playing football, enjoying the game. Getting up, going to training, sharing hours in the changing room, getting out on the grass, touching the ball, traveling, games... and so on up to 705 with my Sevilla; 39 more with Sevilla AtlƩtico, whose honour I have to play in the stadium that bears my name; 183 matches in my four years in all competitions with Manchester City; and 61 with my national team of Spain divided into 56 with the senior team and 5 with the Under-21s. I've been fortunate to lift trophies, wherever I've played I've shared the titles with my teammates, but nothing has changed my behaviour. Because I'm still a simple guy... and I love my Sevilla FC.

The truth is that the next few days are going to be difficult for me. That's why I want to start by thanking Pablo Blanco, who gave me to make my debut as a Sevillista at the age of 15. And believe it or not, the road has not been long for me. On the contrary. It has even been short, believe it or not. For me, playing football is the best, I enjoy it and that's why I've made it to 39. I live to give joy to my Sevilla and the Spanish fans. And if it hadn't been for my hip, I would have continued, that's for sure. That's why it was very difficult for me to say: this is the end here. But it's not something new, I had been suffering from this for four years and, honestly, I couldn't take it anymore.

Before, when I looked at the games played, I did not count the countless games of my training, those that I attended accompanied by my grandfather Antonio, who also took me to training. These are moments when unforgettable memories come to my mind with my parents, Paco and Aurora. Thanks, mum, thanks dad. I only hope I have been able to return the love with which you have treated me all my life. I trust that you are proud of your five children - Paco, Marco (thank you brother for your help on the road we traveled together), JesĆŗs, JosĆ© Mari and Javi - and that my behavior and my commitment to the family make you happy. Those values that you taught me, not to change and to be the same from day one, are the same values that I now pass on to my children.

Then came into my life the person who brings me balance and moderation, my love. I want to thank Alejandra who never left me alone, even in the worst moments. In difficulty I have counted on her, she has helped me, she has understood me and has put up with me because of how I live football. She has put up with my bad moments, my mood swings and loneliness. When we lose, I don't want to see anyone. It is not easy to coexist in those moments and Alejandra, you have shown me that you understand me like no one else in this world. Thank you for your patience and thank you for loving me so much. Ale, with you we have formed a family with Jesus and Romeo, my two little ones, my two jewels, the reason of my life. Together with your mother, we instilled in you the values we grew up with. Passion, respect and humility are not lacking in your education. And besides, you are Sevillistas."

For me these six months have been a gift knowing the problems I have endured. I have been suffering from hip problems for several years, but in the last few weeks the condition has worsened, it has been getting worse. Returning to training and playing has been very difficult, but very emotional at the same time. Why leave in December?  What I wanted was to accompany my teammates in this stretch. We came from two very difficult years and I wanted to be with the team, to help in this transition to help the younger players and to pass on my experience of how I understand how great Sevilla FC is.

Since the first moment, JoaquĆn CaparrĆ³s, who gave me the opportunity to fulfill the dream of making my debut in the first team, I have worked with many coaches and I have learned from all of them. My debut came at MontjuĆÆc against Espanyol, I came on for Paco Gallardo, and since then we have achieved many things. Perhaps the first Europa League, after so many years, may be the most special for giving that joy to the fans? But all titles are wonderful.

I do not forget the very hard personal moments that I have had to overcome, the painful losses of Jose Reyes and Antonio Puerta. I decided to wear Puerta's number because my desire has been to give my all for him in every game. And that's what it has to be, to give joy to the fans in their memory and in the memory of two Sevillistas who left us too soon and too young.

My adventure in Manchester was very fulfilling The help, among others, of the coach, Manuel Pellegrini, allowed us to win and enjoy ourselves away from home. I belong to only one club, but I have to divide my CV between two teams. At City I was happy and matured as a player and as a person. I will be enormously grateful to the people and the fans for all the affection they showed me.

South Africa 2010, that afternoon at Soccer City in Johannesburg, will remain engrained in the memory of all Spaniards. Participating in the goal was the icing on the cake of a historic feat for our football. I'm not forgetting Kiev, another unforgettable memory. However, this last period with Luis de la Fuente's national team has filled me with great joy. It has been a time of dedication and sacrifice until the end, with a happy ending. For that reason, it has been incredible playing for my country. The memories remain intact and we are proud to have made so many people happy.

I end by thanking all the club's employees, all those who have been working tirelessly for months to organise today. Thank you all very much. I leave the most important thank you for last. Yes, you, the Sevillistas who live every day with passion, with emotion and with the energy of sharing this glorious feeling. Because no one is greater than you. Nobody feels the way you feel. Nobody loves this red-and-white family as much as you do. No one feels the pride of football in this city more than you do. No one better than you to guide us on the road to success.

They say that we never give up, so my greatest wish is that the team maintains the legacy that I have tried to give every day, which is to give everything on the pitch, until the final whistle. May these players and the ones to come do the same so that you can carry them on your shoulders. Make an effort and do not give up, dignify this shirt and this badge. Always in my heart because you will never forget: I will be a Sevillista until I die. I will miss you very much. Come on Sevilla!

Navas finished his career with 705 appearances for Sevilla in his long and illustrious career.

What to watch out in LALIGA for 2025

c/o LALIGA

2024 has provided some memorable moments in both LALIGA EA SPORTS and LALIGA HYPERMOTION, but as we turn the page to 2025, it promises to be just as exciting and there is so much to look forward to. Some of the reasons we can share already here.

A fierce battle for the LALIGA EA SPORTS title

Heading into the upcoming matchup between Real Madrid and Valencia on Saturday morning, Manila time, Atletico de Madrid is hanging on to a one-point lead over the defending champions, 41 to 40. Both teams have a game in hand to FC Barcelona, who is currently in third place with 38 points, making this a competitive race for the championship.

The Catalans had a strong start to the season, but since their 3-1 victory over their city rivals RCD Espanyol in early November, they have only won once in their last seven league matches, capped off by their 2-1 home defeat to Atleti on a 90+6' goal from Alexander SĆørloth.

Athletic Club could return to the Champions League after a 10-year absence

Just two points adrift of FC Barcelona in fourth place and not just that far off from the title chase in Athletic Club. If the standings hold firm until the end of the season, it would mean a return to the UEFA Champions League a decade after their last appearance.

Fresh from claiming the Copa del Rey last season, Los Leones have done well both domestically being the only other team aside from the top three currently with double-digit victories, as well as in the UEFA Europa League, where they are level in points with Italian side Lazio atop the league phase.

The Basques already have a huge incentive to do well continentally, as the Europa League final will be held at their home stadium at San Mames this May.

LALIGA HYPERMOTION is heating up as clubs seek promotion to LALIGA EA SPORTS

The quest to join the Spanish top-flight is very much complicated, too.

UD Almerƭa currently leads the race at LALIGA HYPERMOTION with 39 points, with CD MirandƩs and Real Racing Club just one point behind. The top half of the table is separated by just ten points, so anything is still possible in the quest to get promoted.

With so many historic Spanish clubs in contention and hopeful to return to the top flight after years of toiling in the lower divisions, things are about to get even more intense.

In addition, it was a LALIGA HYPERMOTION side who made a major transaction that got Filipino football fans to take notice, when CD Castellon snapped up Nick Markanich from the Charleston Battery in the USL.

Markanich was crowned 2024 Championship Player of the Year, named All-League First Team and won the Golden Boot after setting a new league record with 28 goals scored in the regular season, which was the most goals scored in America across all domestic leagues. The NIU alumnus actually scored thirty goals in all competitions.

Kylian MbappƩ, JuliƔn Ɓlvarez and Lamine Yamal seek their first LALIGA EA SPORTS title

Three of the sport's biggest sensations are battling it out for their first LALIGA EA SPORTS title to their trophy cabinets.

MbappƩ already has a head start with regards to silverware this season, having claimed two titles since joining the team in the summer, as Real Madrid defeated Atalanta, 2-0 for the UEFA Super Cup, followed by a 3-0 triumph over Pachuca for the Intercontinental Cup. The Frenchman scored in both matches, and currently has thirteen goals in all competitions. Ten of those goals came in league play, which is tied for third alongside Ante Budimir behind a couple of FC Barcelona scoring machines in Robert Lewandowski (16) and Rapinha (11).

Lamine Yamal actually made his debut with FC Barcelona back in the 2022/23 season, the last league title the Catalans secured the trophy. Now armed with much more experience, especially after helping Spain reclaim prominence in the Euros, he has made it a priority to win collective titles for the team after racking up numerous individual achievements, including the Kopa Trophy and the Golden Boy Award.

Alvarez, like Yamal, has scored five goals in league play, helping Atleti reach the top of LALIGA EA SPORTS. Much like in his previous stop, he has a Norwegian scoring merchant alongside him, veteran leadership, and is managed by one of the best in the world. The Argentine is hopeful he can claim a league crown to accompany his World Cup crowning achievement.

New Rising Stars

A study back in November from the CIES Football Observatory highlighted the success of the academies from the different LALIGA clubs, which has translated into the current success of the Spanish national team in claiming both the Euros and the Paris Olympics.

Leading the way in this regard is FC Barcelona and their 46 La Masia graduates strewn all across the Big Five European leagues, twelve of which are still with the team, led by Lamine Yamal. Basque sides Real Sociedad and Athletic Club take pride in their grassroots development, with a combined 29 academy graduates in their respective first teams, led by La Real captain Mikel Oyarzabal and the Williams brothers of Athletic, Inaki and Nico.

As a result, the likes of Marc Bernal, Marc CasadĆ³, Pau Cubarsi, and Gerard MartĆn from FC Barcelona, Jon Aramburu, Pablo MarĆn, Jon Pacheco and Jon Ander Olasagasti from Real Sociedad, and Mikel Jauregizar and Adama Boiro from Athletic Bilbao have emerged.

Other notables include Manu Bueno, who scored in Jesus Navas' final home game for Sevilla FC, as well as Hugo Alvarez of RC Celta, who has provided an additional scoring threat for Claudio GirƔldez alongside Iago Aspas and Borja Iglesias.

Not to be outdone, Real Madrid also has a young gun rising up the ranks, as RaĆŗl Asencio has stepped in to help address depth issues at the back line that has been hampered by injuries. This is of course complemented by their key signings in the past few seasons, from Rodrygo, Camavinga, Bellingham, to Endrick and Arda Guler, with the latter two not yet reaching the age of twenty.

And more are coming down the pipeline, thanks to the efforts LALIGA are conducting to help grow the game, including holding grassroots competitions like the recently-concluded LALIGA FC FUTURES  for the U-13 age group, won by Sevilla FC.

Real Madrid-Valencia set to kick off LALIGA in 2025

c/o LALIGA

Kicking off 2025 for LALIGA is a matchup involving two teams in with contrasting positions on the table.

Originally scheduled for early November for Matchday 12, the matchup between Real Madrid and Valencia CF was among the fixtures postponed as a result of the DANA storm that had a major effect on the Valencian Community days prior. The match is set to kick off at 4am Manila time on January 4, with the match to be shown LIVE on beIN Sport.

At the time of the postponement, Real Madrid was trailing then-leaders FC Barcelona by nine points thanks to the latter's 3-1 victory over Catalan rivals RCD Espanyol. Things have changed since, with Los Blancos now in second place behind new leaders Atletico de Madrid by a single point. A victory at the Mestalla, coupled with Atleti dropping points this weekend against CA Osasuna would enable the defending champions to back on top.

The Spanish giants have bounced back nicely after their stunning 4-0 defeat against FC Barcelona, winning five of their next seven league matchups, capped off by an impressive 4-2 triumph over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu. During that same stretch, they have scored at least a couple of goals in all but one game.

Carlo Ancelotti gotten much out of his trident combination of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Jude Bellingham, but also serving as key offensive pieces to produce such form are Fede Valverde and Rodrygo.

However, the Mestalla has served as a challenge, with only two wins in their last ten matches, including a 2-2 draw and a 1-0 defeat in the last couple of seasons. It also was the venue where Vinicius had to deal with misbehavior from a few football fans, which led to the first convictions relating to racist insults in Spain.

As for Los Che, the team has struggled, only procuring two wins so far this season, including a winless December in league action that has dragged to the bottom of the table alongside Valladolid .

With the prospects of relegation looming, the squad has made a coaching change, installing Carlos Corberan to replace club legend Ruben Baraja.

He came back home after his stint in England with West Bromwich Albion, where he had been in charge of the Championship side for 26 months, taking the Baggies to the Promotion Playoffs last season and keeping them in the hunt for that opportunity this season.

Carlos shares during his presentation, "Thanks to Valencia CF for believing in me... I would like to send a message of affection, of remembrance to all those victims who suffered the terrible consequences of the DANA tragedy. I am a resident of Cheste, one of the affected towns. From a distance, I experienced it with great sadness, because it was a very painful situation."

The former Marcelo Bielsa assistant adds, "I am here to work and to give my best, so everyone should be convinced that I am going to give my all in this... I am a Valencianista who is going to work with great responsibility, and the dedication that I am going to have to achieve the objective is going to be the maximum that a coach can have."

Valencia CF is hoping that a new manager bounce coupled with their recent home form against Real Madrid would provide them the necessary spark for a potential upset to kickstart the year.
