Kobe Monje stepped up for the undermanned Colegio de San Juan de Letran as they defeated Arellano in a matchup of two also-rans in the NCAA Season 99 men's basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan, 67-58.
Originally intended to take on the leadership role next season, Monje took over with three key cogs for the Knights sidelined, including skipper Kurt Reyson.
He finished with as the game's only player to score in double figures with thirteen points. Kobe also added three rebounds, four assists, and a steal, as the Knights secured their second win of the season.
Head coach Rensy Bajar says about Kobe, "I’m proud of Kobe since I started at Letran, player ko na sya sa Team B. Kung ano approach ko sa kanya nung 2019, andun pa din. Siya yung nasa level na pwede maging superstar sa liga na ito."
Kobe believes he is now ready to take the mantle with the numbers he has put up now.
"Nung una hindi ko pa mailabas ganun na role. Dati kasi role player lang ako, naglalaro lang ako five mins, pinakamatagal 15 minutes."
The Chiefs fall to 2-13.
