Altas move ahead in NCAA Season 99 chess


University of Perpetual Help System Dalta defeated San Beda, 2.5-1.5 to maintain their lead at the NCAA Season 99 chess tournament hosted at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran this past weekend.

Securing wins for the Altas are Genesis Borromeo in board one and Carl Zirex Sato in board three, with a Ronald Canino draw against Leonel Escote on board two sealing the tie in their favor.

Adrian de Leon managed to eke out a point for the Red Lions by defeating John Marx Anastacio.

The result ensures Perpetual remains at the helm after four rounds with thirteen points. They had previously waylaid these opponents in the last three rounds: a 4-0 walloping over San Sebastian, a 3-1 victory over Arellano, and a 3.5-.5 shellacking of the College of Saint Benilde.

Mentored by FIDE Master Roel Abelgas. the school from the south increased their gap to 1.5 points against their just-beaten opponents, with their gap against Lyceum now at a couple of points.

The defending champion Pirates fended off Emilio Aguinaldo College, 2.5-1.5.

In the other matchups, San Sebastian beat Mapua, 2.5-1.5, JRU posted a 3-1 win over hosts Letran, and Arellano securing a 2.5-1.5 triumph over CSB.

In juniors' action, Perpetual also flexed its dominance with a 3.5-.5 smashing over San Beda, thanks to victories from Kienlan Temple in board one, Cedric Daniel Macato in board two, and Nesley Jovan Magbanua in board four. Hopes of a sweep was prevented by a draw involving Khent Lourence Canas.
