NCAA kickstarts 98th season

Collegiate competition gets raised up a notch with the start of the 98th season of the NCAA, starting things off with the Opening Ceremonies at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Unlike the past couple of seasons, where only men's basketball and women's volleyball were played in person, the upcoming campaign will see the return of six more events: high school basketball, cheerleading, swimming, track and field, beach volleyball, and men's indoor volleyball.

Meanwhile, taekwondo and chess, which previously took place virtually, will now revert back to in-person competition, making it a ten-event season.

Season 98 Policy Board representative Dr. Jose Paolo Campos of host school Emilio Aguinaldo College shared on Monday's media launch, "We are hoping to return to a normal season. We look forward to a very successful season."

He adds, "For the past two seasons, we have seen the resilience of our member school communities and student-athletes. As we begin Season 98, the Philippines’ first collegiate athletic competition remains steadfast in instilling values in our students: “Achieve Greatness Every Day.’ We continue to inspire everyone to do their best in everything they do, every day."

After the Opening Ceremonies, the Generals will kick off competition proper against Arellano at 330pm. Following that will be a Final Four rematch with Mapua facing San Beda at 6pm.

Chiefs mentor Cholo Martin thinks that this season is very much open. He says, "It's anybody's ballgame.  All teams are outstanding.  Walang favorites, you will be surprised."

The Cardinals were so close to ending a title drought lasting over three decades, and they have an intact lineup to rely on and hope to close the deal this time. Randy Alcantara says, "I agree sa mga sinasabi ng mga coaches. Sa haba ng preparation, parang even lahat ng teams."

Defending champions Letran had been originally set to be part of opening day, but its start of the season was moved to September 14, where they will face Jose Rizal University.

Head coach Bonnie Tan knows what lies ahead for the Knights. He notes, "I agree. Lahat ng teams malakas at lumaki. Nandiyan pa rin ang San Beda, Mapua, CSB and Baste (San Sebastian)."
